ISIS Activity Monitoring in Africa 15–21 June 2026

During the period between 15 and 21 June 2026, the Syria Monitor Strategic Research Center documented 6 major ISIS-related incidents across Africa.

The most significant activity was concentrated in Niger, where ISIS militants conducted a series of coordinated attacks targeting military and security installations. The most notable incidents included the attack on Air Base 101 at Niamey Airport, as well as simultaneous operations in the Tillabéri and Téra regions.

In Nigeria, militants attacked a military position in Sokoto State, killing at least three soldiers. Meanwhile, attacks against civilians were reported in northern Cameroon, and the humanitarian impact of insecurity continued in northern Mozambique, where large-scale displacement was recorded.

Assessment

This week’s data indicates that Africa, particularly the Sahel region, remains the most active operational theater for ISIS outside Iraq and Syria. The group continues to expand attacks against military and security targets while employing increasingly complex and coordinated tactics across a wider geographical area.

The concentration of incidents in Niger, combined with continuing violence in Nigeria and cross-border activity near Benin, demonstrates the group’s sustained operational capability and growing regional reach.
